China Warns of No Winners in Trade War After US Tariff Hike

The Chinese Foreign Ministry on Sunday issued a stern warning, stating that there will be no winners in trade and tariff wars. This announcement comes in response to the United States' recent decision to impose an additional 10 percent tariff on imports from China.

In a statement released on the ministry's website, a spokesperson expressed China's firm opposition to the U.S. move, emphasizing that necessary countermeasures will be taken to defend China's legitimate rights and interests.

\\"China's position is firm and consistent,\\" the spokesperson stated, adding that \\"the U.S.'s unilateral tariff hikes severely violate World Trade Organization rules.\\"

\\"This move cannot solve the U.S.'s problems at home and, more importantly, does not benefit either side, still less the world,\\" the statement read.

Addressing the issue of fentanyl, the spokesperson noted that China is one of the world's toughest countries on counternarcotics, both in terms of policy and implementation. \\"Fentanyl is an issue for the U.S.,\\" the spokesperson remarked.

\\"In the spirit of humanity and goodwill, China has given support to the U.S.'s response to this issue. At the U.S.'s request, China announced back in 2019 the decision to officially schedule fentanyl-related substances as a class. We are the first country in the world to do so,\\" the spokesperson said.

The Chinese Foreign Ministry urged the U.S. to view and address its own fentanyl issue objectively and rationally, rather than threatening other countries with arbitrary tariff hikes.

\n\n

\\"Additional tariffs are not constructive and are bound to affect and harm counternarcotics cooperation between the two sides in the future,\\" the spokesperson stressed.

China called on the U.S. to correct its wrongdoings, maintain the hard-won positive dynamics in counternarcotics cooperation, and promote the steady, sound, and sustainable development of China-U.S. relations.
