China’s Daily Box Office Sets New Record During Spring Festival

On Wednesday, the Spring Festival, China's daily box office revenue soared to a new record, generating an impressive 1.805 billion yuan ($249 million). This remarkable achievement surpasses the previous record set during the 2021 Chinese New Year, according to the China Film Administration (CFA).

The day saw 35.15 million moviegoers flock to cinemas across the country, highlighting the robust recovery and growth of China's film industry. The Spring Festival holiday, one of the most lucrative movie-going seasons in China, runs from January 28 to February 4 this year, one day longer than in previous years.

Leading the box office charts are six domestic films that debuted on Wednesday. These films span a diverse range of genres, including Chinese mythology, wuxia (martial arts and chivalry), comedy, fantasy, animation, and drama.

Huajin Securities noted that these new releases cater to various audience groups, with many being installments in highly rated, high-grossing franchises boasting strong reputations and large fan bases. This diversity has contributed significantly to the record-breaking box office performance.

Since December last year, the CFA has encouraged relevant institutions to allocate approximately 600 million yuan in movie-going consumption subsidies. Analysts suggest that this initiative aims to unlock the full consumption potential of moviegoers and stimulate the cultural sector.

Kaiyuan Securities predicts that total box office takings during the 2025 Spring Festival holiday will see a 6.7% year-on-year increase, reaching 8.54 billion yuan. This optimistic forecast reflects the anticipated continued growth and vitality of China's film market.
