On Wednesday, the Chinese mainland's box office soared to a new height, reaching an unprecedented 1.805 billion yuan (approximately $249 million) in a single day during the Spring Festival, also known as Chinese New Year.
A staggering 35.15 million moviegoers flocked to cinemas on that day, both figures surpassing previous records set during the 2021 Chinese New Year, according to the China Film Administration (CFA) on Thursday.
The Spring Festival holiday, one of the most lucrative movie-going seasons in China, spans from January 28 to February 4 this year, extended by one day compared to previous years.
Dominating the box office charts are six newly released domestic films that debuted on Wednesday. These films encompass a diverse array of genres, including Chinese mythology, wuxia (martial arts and chivalry), comedy, fantasy, animation, and drama.
Huajin Securities remarked that these films cater to various audience tastes due to their genre diversity. Many of these releases are installments of highly acclaimed and commercially successful franchises with strong reputations and substantial fan bases.
In an effort to unlock the full consumption potential of moviegoers, the CFA has encouraged relevant institutions to allocate around 600 million yuan in moviegoing consumption subsidies since December last year.
Kaiyuan Securities forecasts that total box office revenues will increase by 6.7 percent year-on-year, reaching 8.54 billion yuan during the 2025 Spring Festival holiday.
