China’s Highways Bracing for Record EV Charging Surge During Spring Festival

China's highways are gearing up for a record-breaking surge in electric vehicle (EV) charging during the upcoming Spring Festival holiday. According to data from the State Grid Corporation of China, the daily highway charging volumes are expected to average over 7.5 million kilowatt-hours during the eight-day holiday starting on January 28, marking a 52 percent year-on-year increase.

The single-day peak charging volume during the holiday period is projected to exceed 9 million kilowatt-hours, expanding by 34 percent from the same period last year. The data reveals that peak travel days ahead of the holiday, January 26 and 27, will see charging demand spike between 9 a.m. and 9 p.m. as millions of travelers hit the roads.

To accommodate the rising demand, China has accelerated the construction of charging infrastructure along its highways. By the end of 2024, 98 percent of highway service areas had charging facilities, with 35,000 charging poles in place. This extensive network ensures that EV drivers can travel long distances with confidence, contributing to a smoother and more sustainable travel experience during one of the busiest times of the year.

The surge in EV charging demand mirrors the rapid growth of new energy vehicles (NEVs) in China. By the end of 2024, the number of NEVs on Chinese roads had reached 31.4 million, marking a staggering 260-fold increase over the past decade. This growth is attributed to the country's technological advancements in the NEV industry, the improvement of charging infrastructure, and the growing eco-friendly awareness among Chinese people.

The Spring Festival, also known as the Chinese New Year, is one of the most significant holidays in China, characterized by massive nationwide travel as people return to their hometowns to celebrate with family. This year, the combination of increased travel and the rising popularity of EVs is expected to set new records in highway charging, highlighting China's commitment to sustainable transportation and environmental conservation.

As millions prepare for their journeys, authorities and service providers are working diligently to ensure that charging facilities are operational and accessible, aiming to make this festive season both joyful and green.
