Wang Yi Urges China and U.S. to Find New Path in Bilateral Relations

In a significant move toward shaping the future of China-U.S. relations, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi on Friday called upon both nations to discover a new path for coexistence in the evolving global landscape. The remarks came during a phone conversation with U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio, held at Rubio's request.

Wang, who also serves as a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, highlighted the recent dialogue between Chinese President Xi Jinping and U.S. President Donald Trump. Last Friday, the two leaders engaged in an important phone call, reaching a series of common understandings that could steer the bilateral relationship in a positive direction.

\"The development of China-U.S. relations has come to a new important juncture,\" Wang noted, emphasizing the critical timing of these discussions.

He shared that President Xi comprehensively outlined China's policy toward the United States, to which President Trump responded positively. Trump expressed his desire to maintain strong relations with President Xi and underscored that collaboration between the two nations could address numerous global challenges.

\"The two heads of state have pointed out the direction and set the tone for China-U.S. relations,\" Wang stated, signaling a potential thaw in diplomatic tensions.

Wang stressed the need for both countries to implement the leaders' shared visions. \"Our teams need to maintain communication, manage differences, and expand cooperation in line with the principles of mutual respect, peaceful coexistence, and win-win cooperation,\" he said. \"This approach will promote the steady, sound, and sustainable development of China-U.S. relations, helping us find the right way to get along in the new era.\"

Addressing the internal drivers of China's development, Wang asserted that the leadership of the CPC is the choice of the Chinese people. \"Our development follows a clear historical logic and is propelled by strong internal dynamism,\" he explained. \"Our goal is to deliver a better life for the people and make more contributions to the world. We have no intention of surpassing or replacing anyone, but we must defend our legitimate right to development.\"

On the sensitive Taiwan question, Wang urged the U.S. to handle the matter prudently. \"Taiwan has been part of China's territory since ancient times,\" he emphasized. \"We will never allow Taiwan to be split from China.\" He reminded that the United States has made solemn commitments to abide by the one-China policy in the three China-U.S. joint communiques and should honor those commitments.

Expressing the U.S. perspective, Rubio acknowledged the significance of China-U.S. relations. \"The United States and China are two great countries, and our relationship is the most important bilateral relationship in the 21st century,\" he said. \"It will determine the future of the world.\"

Rubio conveyed the United States' desire for candid communication to resolve differences and manage the bilateral relationship maturely and prudently. \"We hope to work together to address global challenges and maintain peace and stability in the world,\" he added.

Regarding Taiwan, Rubio stated that the United States does not support \"Taiwan independence\" and hopes the Taiwan question can be resolved peacefully in a manner acceptable to both sides of the Taiwan Strait.

Concluding the conversation, Wang called on both nations to act responsibly on the global stage. \"Great countries should act in a manner befitting their status, shoulder their due international responsibilities, maintain world peace, and help countries achieve common development,\" he said. \"I hope you will act accordingly and play a constructive role for the future of the people of China and the United States, as well as for the peace and stability of the world.\"
