For the past three years, photographer Wang Wen-hsien from Beigang Town on the island of Taiwan has been making regular journeys across the Taiwan Strait to Meizhou Island in Fujian Province, southeastern China. His mission: to capture the essence of Mazu, the revered goddess of the sea, through his lens.
Mazu, worshipped across southern China and beyond, symbolizes protection and guidance for those at sea. Wang's fascination with Mazu culture has led him to immerse himself in the vibrant festivals and rituals celebrated on Meizhou Island, considered the birthplace of the goddess.
\"Every visit deepens my understanding of Mazu's influence on the local communities,\" Wang shares. \"Through my photographs, I hope to convey the profound connection people have with the sea and their traditions.\"
Wang's ongoing project not only documents the rich cultural heritage surrounding Mazu but also serves as a bridge between the people on both sides of the Taiwan Strait. His work highlights shared traditions and fosters mutual appreciation of this enduring maritime legacy.
The photographer's dedication reflects a broader interest in preserving and promoting cultural ties in the region. As Wang continues his journey, his images offer a window into the enduring spirit of Mazu and the communities that honor her.
