Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi has called for China and the United States to find the right path to coexist in a new era, emphasizing the importance of cooperation and mutual respect. In a phone conversation on Friday with U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio, requested by the latter, Wang urged both nations to implement the understandings reached by their leaders and to manage their differences responsibly.
Wang Yi, who is also a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, highlighted the recent important phone call between Chinese President Xi Jinping and U.S. President Donald Trump. During that conversation, both leaders agreed on several key issues and expressed a willingness to maintain positive relations.
\"The development of China-U.S. relations has reached a new vital juncture,\" Wang said. He emphasized that President Xi had comprehensively elaborated on China's policy toward the United States, receiving a positive response from President Trump. Trump noted that the United States and China working together could solve many global challenges.
Wang Yi stressed that the direction and tone set by the two heads of state should guide the bilateral relationship. He called on both nations to uphold principles of mutual respect, peaceful coexistence, and win-win cooperation. \"Our two teams need to implement the leaders' important common understandings, maintain communication, manage differences, and expand cooperation,\" he noted.
Addressing concerns over Taiwan, Wang reiterated China's position, emphasizing that Taiwan has been part of China's territory since ancient times. \"We will never allow Taiwan to be split from China,\" he stated, urging the U.S. to handle the Taiwan question prudently and abide by the one-China policy as committed in the three China-U.S. joint communiqués.
Wang also spoke about China's development path, asserting that the leadership of the CPC is the choice of the Chinese people. \"Our goal is to deliver a better life for the people and make more contributions to the world,\" he said. \"We have no intention of surpassing or replacing anyone, but we must defend our legitimate right to development.\"
U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio acknowledged the significance of the U.S.-China relationship, calling it the most important bilateral relationship of the 21st century that will determine the future of the world. He expressed the United States' hope to engage in candid communication with China, resolve differences, and manage the bilateral relationship maturely and prudently.
Rubio affirmed that the United States does not support \"Taiwan independence\" and hopes the Taiwan question can be resolved peacefully in a manner acceptable to both sides of the Taiwan Strait. \"The United States and China are two great countries,\" Rubio said, emphasizing the need for both nations to work together to address global challenges and maintain world peace and stability.
Concluding the call, Wang Yi urged that big countries should act responsibly on the international stage. \"I hope you will act accordingly and play a constructive role for the future of the people of China and the United States, as well as for the peace and stability of the world,\" he said.
