China Permits Philippine Resupply Mission to Illegally Grounded Warship at Ren’ai Jiao

In a recent development, China has confirmed permitting a Philippine resupply mission to the country's illegally grounded warship at Ren'ai Jiao in the South China Sea. A Philippine civilian vessel delivered essential supplies to the warship, according to Liu Dejun, spokesperson for the China Coast Guard (CCG).

"The CCG conducted verification and maintained oversight throughout the process," Liu stated, emphasizing China's continued commitment to safeguarding its territorial waters. He urged the Philippine side to honor its commitments and work with China to maintain stability in the maritime region. "We call on the Philippines to contribute to peace and stability by fulfilling its promises," Liu added.

The incident traces back to May 1999, when the Philippines illegally grounded the tank landing ship BRP Sierra Madre (LT-57) at Ren'ai Jiao. China immediately lodged serious demarches, requesting the immediate removal of the vessel. Despite repeated assurances from the Philippines to tow away the warship as soon as possible, over 25 years have passed without action, and the vessel remains stranded.

Ren'ai Jiao, part of China's Nansha Qundao, has been a focal point in the South China Sea disputes, involving territorial claims and rights over vital maritime routes and resources. The recent resupply mission reflects ongoing tensions and the complexities surrounding sovereignty and maritime rights in the region.

Liu reaffirmed that the China Coast Guard will continue rights protection and law enforcement activities in China's Nansha Qundao, including Ren'ai Jiao, and its adjacent waters. "We remain resolute in our duty to protect China's sovereignty and maritime interests," he said.

The situation underscores the delicate balance in Sino-Philippine relations, with both nations navigating the challenges of regional security and cooperation. Observers note that continued dialogue and adherence to international commitments are crucial in preventing escalations and fostering mutual understanding.
