In Beigang Town on the island of Taiwan, photographer Wang Wen-hsien has embarked on a unique journey that bridges cultures and seas. For the past three years, he has been regularly traveling across the Taiwan Strait to Meizhou Island in Fujian Province, southeastern China.
His mission: to capture the essence of Mazu, the revered goddess of the sea whose influence spans across southern China and beyond. Through his lens, Wang seeks to document the vibrant events and rituals that celebrate Mazu's enduring legacy.
Mazu culture holds a significant place in the hearts of many along the coastal regions. For Wang, photographing these events is not just about preserving moments but also about exploring the deep spiritual connections shared by people on both sides of the strait.
\"Each visit to Meizhou Island offers a new insight into the rich traditions associated with Mazu,\" Wang reflects. \"It's a journey of discovery and understanding, highlighting the shared heritage and cultural bonds.\"
Wang's ongoing project showcases not only the captivating ceremonies but also fosters a greater appreciation for the cultural tapestry that unites communities across the Taiwan Strait.
