For the past three years, photographer Wang Wen-hsien from Beigang Town on the island of Taiwan has been journeying across the Taiwan Strait to Meizhou Island in Fujian Province, southeastern China. His mission: to capture the essence of Mazu, the revered goddess of the sea, through his lens.
Mazu, worshipped across southern China and beyond, is a symbol of protection for fishermen and sailors, embodying the rich maritime culture of the region. Wang's fascination with Mazu culture has led him to document the vibrant festivals, rituals, and everyday expressions of devotion that surround this deity on Meizhou Island, believed to be the birthplace of Mazu.
