Capturing the Spirit of Mazu: A Photographer’s Cross-Strait Journey

For the past three years, photographer Wang Wen-hsien from Beigang Town on the island of Taiwan has been embarking on a heartfelt journey across the Taiwan Strait. His destination is Meizhou Island in Fujian Province, southeastern China—a place deeply entwined with the legend of Mazu, the revered goddess of the sea.

Mazu holds a special place in the hearts of many across southern China and beyond, symbolizing protection and guidance for those who navigate the seas. For Wang, capturing the essence of Mazu culture through his lens has become a passion that bridges the waters separating his home from Meizhou.

\"I feel a profound connection when I'm in Meizhou,\" Wang shares. \"The fervor and devotion of the people here towards Mazu is something truly extraordinary. Through my photographs, I hope to convey the spirit and significance of this cultural heritage.\"

Wang's work not only documents the vibrant rituals and ceremonies dedicated to Mazu but also reflects the shared cultural ties that span the Taiwan Strait. His images showcase the colorful festivities, the dedication of the followers, and the timeless stories that have been passed down through generations.

As Wang continues his journey, his photographs serve as a reminder of the enduring connections and rich traditions that unite communities on both sides of the strait. His dedication to preserving and sharing Mazu's legacy offers a unique glimpse into a world where culture transcends boundaries.
