For the past three years, photographer Wang Wen-hsien from Beigang Town on the island of Taiwan has embarked on a personal pilgrimage across the Taiwan Strait to Meizhou Island in Fujian Province, southeastern China. His mission: to capture the essence of Mazu, the revered goddess of the sea, through his lens.
Mazu, worshipped across southern China and beyond, symbolizes protection and compassion for those who navigate life's unpredictable waters. Wang's fascination with Mazu culture began in his hometown, where the goddess holds significant cultural importance. Seeking a deeper connection, he ventured to Meizhou Island, considered the birthplace of Mazu herself.
\"The moment I set foot on Meizhou Island, I felt an indescribable bond,\" Wang recalls. \"The vibrant festivals, the devout worshippers, and the rich traditions all reflect a deep-rooted heritage that transcends borders.\"
Through his photography, Wang aims to highlight the shared cultural ties between people on both sides of the Taiwan Strait.
