Beijing, April 25, 2024 — China has honored the three astronauts of the Shenzhou-18 mission with prestigious medals for their significant contributions to the nation's space endeavors. Veteran astronaut Ye Guangfu received a second-class aerospace achievement medal, while his crewmates Li Cong and Li Guangsu were awarded third-class aerospace achievement medals and the honorary title of \"Heroic Astronaut.\"
The honors were bestowed by the Communist Party of China Central Committee, the State Council, and the Central Military Commission, recognizing the astronauts' dedication and achievements during their mission aboard China's space station.
Launched on April 25, 2024, the Shenzhou-18 mission marked Ye Guangfu's second journey to the space station. As the mission commander, Ye led the crew through a six-month expedition, extending his total time in orbit to over a year — a first for a Chinese astronaut. He previously spent six months aboard the station during the Shenzhou-13 mission.
For Li Cong and Li Guangsu, Shenzhou-18 was their inaugural spaceflight. Li Cong, the youngest member of the crew, successfully completed all assigned tasks, showcasing exceptional skill and commitment. Li Guangsu made history by installing the first space debris protection device on the space station during his first spacewalk.
During their 192 days in orbit, the trio conducted two extravehicular activities and carried out nearly 100 space science experiments and in-orbit application payload tests. Their work significantly advanced China's capabilities in space science and technology.
The astronauts returned to Earth on November 4, 2024, setting a national record for the longest manned space mission. Their achievements exemplify China's growing prowess in space exploration and its commitment to peaceful utilization of space.
The Shenzhou-18 mission not only advanced scientific knowledge but also inspired people across China and the world, highlighting the importance of continued exploration and international cooperation in space.
