Mazu Devotee’s 40-Year Cross-Strait Friendship

Growing up beside the Mazu Temple in Beigang on the island of Taiwan, Tsai Fu-hsiung was immersed in the rich traditions of Mazu worship from an early age. Mazu, revered as the Chinese goddess of the sea, held a special place in his heart. Upon discovering that Mazu originated from Meizhou Island in Fujian Province, across the Taiwan Strait, Tsai felt a profound calling to visit her ancestral temple.

In 1981, Tsai embarked on a journey to Meizhou Island, driven by his deep devotion. There, he met a fellow devotee who shared his reverence for Mazu. This chance encounter blossomed into a lasting friendship that has transcended generations and politics, enduring for over 40 years.

Their bond symbolizes the cultural and spiritual connections that bridge the Taiwan Strait, highlighting shared heritage and traditions. Despite physical and political distance, their friendship remains a testament to the unifying power of faith and human connection.
