Growing up beside the Mazu Temple in Beigang on the island of Taiwan, Tsai Fu-hsiung felt a deep connection to the sea goddess Mazu. When he discovered that Mazu originated from Meizhou Island in Fujian Province, just across the Taiwan Strait, Tsai was inspired to embark on a pilgrimage to her ancestral temple.
In 1981, Tsai set out on his journey, driven by faith and curiosity. Upon reaching Meizhou Island, he met a fellow devotee who shared his reverence for Mazu. Despite the distance and complexities between their homes, the two formed a bond rooted in shared culture and tradition.
For over 40 years, Tsai and his friend from Meizhou Island have maintained a close relationship, their friendship transcending generations and the waters of the Taiwan Strait. Their story is a testament to the enduring connections that cultural and religious beliefs can foster, bridging gaps and bringing people together across borders.
