China Creates 12.56 Million New Urban Jobs in 2024, Employment Remains Stable

China has achieved a significant milestone in its employment sector, creating 12.56 million new urban jobs in 2024, according to the Ministry of Human Resources and Social Security. This achievement surpasses expectations and reflects the nation's ongoing economic resilience and growth.

At a press conference on Tuesday, ministry spokesperson Lu Aihong announced that the surveyed urban unemployment rate stood at 5.1 percent in 2024, marking a 0.1 percentage point decrease from the previous year. \"The employment situation remained generally stable,\" Lu stated, highlighting the government's effective policies in maintaining workforce stability amid global economic uncertainties.

By the end of 2024, over 33.05 million individuals who had been lifted from poverty secured employment, signifying progress in China's poverty alleviation efforts. The integration of these individuals into the workforce underscores the nation's commitment to improving living standards and promoting inclusive economic development.

Furthermore, China's social security system saw substantial growth, with nearly 1.39 billion social security card holders by the end of last year. Of these, 1.07 billion are digital social security card users, reflecting the country's push towards digitalization. Many citizens hold both physical and digital cards, facilitating easier access to social services and benefits.

The ministry has also fortified the standardized management of vocational competence assessments. In 2024 alone, over 12 million individuals obtained vocational skill-level certificates or professional qualification certificates. This emphasis on skill development aims to enhance the employability of workers and meet the evolving needs of various industries.

Looking ahead to 2025, the ministry announced plans to implement a targeted employment support program focusing on key sectors, industries, urban-rural grassroots, and micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises. The program will establish a mechanism for collecting and releasing information on job positions related to major projects, aiming to bridge the gap between job seekers and employers efficiently.

In addition, efforts are underway to accelerate the research and formulation of policies to enhance the private pension system's appeal. Strengthening the private pension framework is expected to provide more robust financial security for the aging population.

As of the end of 2023, approximately 70,000 human resource service agencies were operating nationwide, employing 1.06 million people. These agencies have played a pivotal role in the labor market, providing services to 300 million workers and 55.99 million employers throughout 2023. Notably, around 40 percent of these employers are in the manufacturing sector, highlighting the sector's significant demand for human resource services.

Addressing youth employment remains a top priority for the ministry. This year, the ministry will introduce a youth job creation program, including measures specifically designed to boost employment for college graduates. \"Throughout 2025, we will organize a series of activities to promote employment and entrepreneurship among young people,\" said Chen Yongjia, an official with the ministry. This initiative reflects the government's commitment to nurturing young talent and fostering an environment conducive to innovation and growth.
