President Xi Jinping, General Secretary of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, chaired a pivotal meeting of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee on Monday. The gathering focused on reviewing key reports and strategies aimed at propelling China's high-quality development and ecological protection efforts, particularly in the Yellow River Basin.
The meeting delved into a report from the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee, which had reviewed and discussed the work reports of the leading Party members' groups of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress (NPC), the State Council, the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), the Supreme People's Court (SPC), and the Supreme People's Procuratorate (SPP). The Secretariat of the CPC Central Committee also presented its work report.
Significant emphasis was placed on opinions concerning the comprehensive promotion of ecological protection and high-quality development in the Yellow River Basin—a critical region for China's environmental sustainability and economic progress.
The meeting commended the achievements of the leading Party members' groups of the five state institutions over the past year and approved their work plans for 2025. It was stressed that in 2025, these groups must prioritize actionable outcomes, collaborate to drive reforms, and contribute to advancing high-quality development and the realization of Chinese modernization.
The Secretariat of the CPC Central Committee was urged to enhance political capacity, strengthen strict self-governance, and effectively accomplish all tasks entrusted by the CPC Central Committee.
Highlighting the strategic importance of the Yellow River Basin, the meeting called for vigorous efforts to fully enforce the Yellow River Protection Law. Actions are to be taken to systematically enhance water source conservation in the upper reaches, reinforce soil and water conservation in the middle reaches, and advance wetland protection and ecological governance in the lower reaches.
The meeting also underscored the necessity to ensure the safety of critical dams, reservoirs, and infrastructure. There was a call to synergize the high-quality development of the Yellow River Basin with broader strategies such as the large-scale development of the western region and the rise of the central region. Efforts to improve the holistic and systematic protection of cultural heritage and promote the integration of culture and tourism development were also discussed.
