Xi Jinping Chairs CPC Meeting to Review Reports, Focus on Yellow River Basin Development

Chinese President Xi Jinping, who is also the general secretary of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, chaired a significant meeting of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee on Monday in Beijing.

The meeting focused on reviewing crucial reports and opinions that will shape China’s future development. The Political Bureau examined a comprehensive report from its Standing Committee after deliberations on the work reports of the leading Party members’ groups from several key state institutions. These include the Standing Committee of the National People’s Congress (NPC), the State Council, the National Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), the Supreme People’s Court (SPC), and the Supreme People’s Procuratorate (SPP), along with the work report of the Secretariat of the CPC Central Committee.

One of the highlights of the meeting was the review of opinions on comprehensively promoting ecological protection and high-quality development in the Yellow River Basin, underscoring the CPC’s commitment to sustainable development and environmental conservation.

The CPC leadership fully recognized and praised the efforts of the leading Party members’ groups of the NPC Standing Committee, the State Council, the CPPCC National Committee, the SPC, and the SPP over the past year. The meeting approved their work plans for 2025, setting the stage for continued progress in China’s governance and reforms.

The meeting emphasized that in 2025, these leading Party members’ groups of the five state institutions must prioritize decisive action, collaborate to advance reforms, and contribute significantly to high-quality development and the realization of Chinese modernization.

The Secretariat of the CPC Central Committee was urged to enhance its political capability, strengthen strict self-governance, and successfully accomplish all tasks entrusted by the CPC Central Committee.

Regarding the Yellow River Basin, the meeting highlighted its significance and called for comprehensive efforts to promote ecological protection and high-quality development in the region. The full enforcement of the Yellow River Protection Law was emphasized as a crucial step in this direction.

The meeting outlined specific tasks, including systematically enhancing water source conservation in the upper reaches of the Yellow River, strengthening soil and water conservation in the middle reaches, and advancing wetland protection and ecological governance in the lower reaches. These efforts aim to ensure the safety of important dams, reservoirs, and infrastructure throughout the basin.

Furthermore, the meeting stressed the importance of aligning the high-quality development of the Yellow River Basin with broader national strategies, such as the large-scale development of the western region and the rise of the central region. It also called for improved protection of cultural heritage and the promotion of the integration of culture and tourism development in the area.
