Xi Jinping Chairs CPC Meeting to Advance Yellow River Ecological Protection and Development

In a pivotal meeting held on Monday, Xi Jinping, General Secretary of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, chaired a session of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee. The gathering focused on reviewing significant reports and setting the course for China’s high-quality development and ecological protection efforts in the Yellow River Basin.

The meeting assessed a report from the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee, which included work reports from the leading Party members’ groups of the Standing Committee of the National People’s Congress (NPC), the State Council, the National Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), the Supreme People’s Court (SPC), and the Supreme People’s Procuratorate (SPP). Additionally, the work report of the Secretariat of the CPC Central Committee was reviewed.

Recognizing the achievements of the past year, the meeting approved the work plans for 2025 of the leading Party members’ groups of the five state institutions and the Secretariat. The leadership emphasized the necessity for these groups to prioritize effective action, drive reforms, and make new contributions toward advancing high-quality development and the modernization of China.

Xi Jinping highlighted the importance of strengthening political ability and strict self-governance within the Secretariat of the CPC Central Committee, urging them to accomplish all tasks entrusted by the CPC Central Committee.

A significant portion of the meeting was dedicated to discussing comprehensive strategies for ecological protection and high-quality development in the Yellow River Basin. Emphasizing the critical role of the Yellow River in China’s ecology and economy, the meeting called for the promotion of the full enforcement of the Yellow River Protection Law.

Strategies outlined include systematically enhancing water source conservation in the upper reaches, strengthening soil and water conservation in the middle reaches, and advancing wetland protection and ecological governance in the lower reaches of the Yellow River. The meeting also underscored the importance of ensuring the safety of key dams, reservoirs, and infrastructure.

Efforts to synchronize the Yellow River’s high-quality development with the broader strategies of large-scale development in the western region and the rise of the central region were also urged. The leadership called for improved holistic and systematic protection of cultural heritage along the Yellow River and encouraged the integration of culture and tourism development to foster regional growth.
