Xi Jinping Chairs CPC Meeting on Advancing High-Quality Development and Yellow River Protection

Beijing, September 25th – Emphasizing China's commitment to sustainable development and ecological preservation, Xi Jinping, General Secretary of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, led a pivotal meeting of the Political Bureau on Monday. The gathering aimed to review key reports and shape future strategies, focusing on high-quality development and the protection of the Yellow River Basin.

Often hailed as the 'Mother River' of China, the Yellow River holds profound cultural and historical significance. It is a lifeline for millions and a crucial component of China's ecological security. Recognizing this, the CPC leadership is advancing comprehensive measures to ensure the river's health and the well-being of the communities along its course.

During the meeting, the Political Bureau reviewed reports from the leading Party members' groups of significant state bodies, including the National People's Congress (NPC) Standing Committee, the State Council, the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) National Committee, the Supreme People's Court (SPC), and the Supreme People's Procuratorate (SPP). They also assessed the work of the Secretariat of the CPC Central Committee.

The leadership praised the achievements of these groups over the past year and approved their work plans for 2025. Emphasis was placed on prioritizing effective action, fostering reform and innovation, and contributing to China's high-quality development and modernization drive.

A key highlight of the meeting was the approval of opinions on promoting ecological protection and high-quality development in the Yellow River Basin. The CPC called for the full enforcement of the Yellow River Protection Law, aiming to address ecological challenges and promote sustainable practices.

Specific initiatives include enhancing water source conservation in the river's upper reaches, strengthening soil and water conservation in the middle reaches, and advancing wetland protection and ecological governance in the lower reaches. These efforts are designed to protect biodiversity, prevent soil erosion, and ensure the long-term viability of the river system.

The meeting also stressed the importance of safeguarding critical infrastructure such as dams and reservoirs. In addition, there is a strategic focus on aligning the Yellow River Basin's development with broader national initiatives, including the large-scale development of China's western regions and the rise of the central regions.

Cultural heritage preservation and the integration of culture with tourism development along the Yellow River were also underscored. By promoting cultural tourism, China aims to boost local economies while sharing its rich history and traditions with the world.

This meeting reflects the CPC's holistic approach to governance, balancing economic growth with environmental stewardship and cultural preservation. The decisions made are expected to have far-reaching impacts on the region's development and contribute to China's overarching goals of modernization and sustainability.
