Xi Jinping Chairs CPC Leadership Meeting on High-Quality Development and Yellow River Protection

Xi Jinping, General Secretary of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, chaired a pivotal meeting of the CPC’s Political Bureau on Monday. The meeting focused on reviewing critical reports and discussing strategies for advancing high-quality development and ecological protection.

The Political Bureau examined a report from its Standing Committee after delving into the work reports of the leading Party members’ groups from several key state institutions. These included the Standing Committee of the National People’s Congress (NPC), the State Council, the National Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), the Supreme People’s Court (SPC), and the Supreme People’s Procuratorate (SPP). The Secretariat of the CPC Central Committee also presented its annual work report.

A significant part of the discussion centered on opinions regarding the comprehensive promotion of ecological protection and high-quality development in the Yellow River Basin. Recognizing the vital importance of the Yellow River to China’s environment and economy, the meeting underscored the need for concerted efforts to safeguard this crucial region.

The meeting commended the achievements of the leading Party members’ groups and the Secretariat over the past year, approving their work plans for 2025. It was emphasized that in 2025, these groups must prioritize action, unite to push forward reforms, and contribute to the advancement of high-quality development and Chinese modernization.

The Secretariat was urged to enhance its political capabilities, strengthen strict self-governance, and diligently accomplish all tasks assigned by the CPC Central Committee.

Regarding the Yellow River Basin, the meeting highlighted the significance of fully enforcing the Yellow River Protection Law. It called for systematic efforts to enhance water source conservation in the upper reaches, strengthen soil and water conservation in the middle reaches, and advance wetland protection and ecological governance in the lower reaches.

The meeting also stressed the importance of ensuring the safety of key dams, reservoirs, and infrastructure. Efforts should be made to synergize the Yellow River’s high-quality development with strategies such as the large-scale development of the western region and the rise of the central region. Additionally, there was a call to improve the holistic and systematic protection of cultural heritage and promote the integration of culture and tourism development.
