Beijing, October 16, 2023 — President Xi Jinping, General Secretary of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, chaired a significant meeting of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee on Monday. The meeting focused on reviewing critical reports and setting strategic directions for the upcoming year.
The Political Bureau examined a report from its Standing Committee after discussing work reports from the leading Party members’ groups of the Standing Committee of the National People’s Congress (NPC), the State Council, the National Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), the Supreme People’s Court (SPC), and the Supreme People’s Procuratorate (SPP). The Secretariat of the CPC Central Committee also presented its work report.
One of the key topics reviewed was the opinions on comprehensively promoting ecological protection and high-quality development in the Yellow River Basin. The meeting underscored the importance of ecological conservation and sustainable development in this vital region.
The gathering acknowledged the accomplishments of the leading Party members’ groups over the past year and approved their work plans for 2025. It emphasized the necessity for these groups to prioritize effective implementation of policies, collaborate on reforms, and contribute to advancing high-quality development and the realization of Chinese modernization.
The Secretariat was urged to enhance its political capabilities, enforce strict self-governance, and diligently complete all tasks assigned by the CPC Central Committee.
Regarding the Yellow River Basin, the meeting highlighted the significance of ecological protection and called for the full enforcement of the Yellow River Protection Law. Efforts will focus on enhancing water source conservation in the upper reaches, strengthening soil and water conservation in the middle reaches, and advancing wetland protection and ecological governance in the lower reaches.
The meeting also stressed the importance of ensuring the safety of critical infrastructure such as dams and reservoirs. It called for aligning the Yellow River’s high-quality development with broader strategies, including the large-scale development of the western region and the rise of the central region. Additionally, there was a focus on protecting cultural heritage holistically and promoting the integration of culture and tourism development.
