President Xi Jinping, general secretary of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, chaired a significant meeting of the CPC Political Bureau on Monday. The meeting focused on reviewing reports and opinions aimed at advancing high-quality development and ecological protection, especially in the Yellow River Basin.
During the session, the Political Bureau assessed a report from its Standing Committee after discussing the work reports of the leading Party members' groups of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress (NPC), the State Council, the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), the Supreme People's Court (SPC), the Supreme People's Procuratorate (SPP), as well as the Secretariat of the CPC Central Committee.
The meeting fully recognized the achievements of these leading Party members' groups over the past year and approved their work plans for 2025. Emphasizing the importance of action and reform, the meeting called on the leading Party members' groups of the five state institutions to prioritize getting things done, consolidating efforts to push forward reforms, and making new contributions to advancing high-quality development and Chinese modernization in 2025.
The Secretariat was encouraged to enhance its political capabilities, strengthen strict self-governance, and effectively accomplish all tasks entrusted by the CPC Central Committee.
Focus on the Yellow River Basin
A key focus of the meeting was the comprehensive promotion of ecological protection and high-quality development in the Yellow River Basin. The Political Bureau called for the full enforcement of the Yellow River Protection Law to safeguard the vital waterway known as the "Mother River" of China.
Efforts were urged to systematically enhance water source conservation in the upper reaches of the Yellow River, strengthen soil and water conservation in the middle reaches, and advance wetland protection and ecological governance in the lower reaches. The meeting also highlighted the importance of ensuring the safety of critical dams, reservoirs, and infrastructure.
Furthermore, the meeting emphasized the need to synergize the Yellow River's high-quality development with the strategies of large-scale development of the western region and the rise of the central region. It called for improving the holistic and systematic protection of cultural heritage and promoting the integration of culture and tourism development along the Yellow River Basin.
