Gen Z Star Wan Yuehan Revives Sichuan Opera’s ‘Legend of the White Snake’

At just 23 years old, Wan Yuehan is breathing new life into the ancient art of Sichuan Opera.

Born after the year 2000, Wan is a rising star at the Chongqing Sichuan Opera Theater. She has captivated audiences with her portrayal of Lady White in the iconic production of The Legend of the White Snake. While many of her peers are immersed in modern entertainment, Wan's journey into the traditional world of Sichuan Opera began at the tender age of 10.

She is part of a dedicated team of young performers who also started their operatic training early in life. Composed mostly of Gen Z artists, this ensemble demonstrates that the timeless story of Bai Suzhen and Xu Xian continues to enchant new generations.

The Legend of the White Snake is a cornerstone of Chinese culture. It tells the tale of Xu Xian, a mortal man who falls in love with Bai Suzhen, a snake spirit transformed into a beautiful woman. Themes of love, betrayal, and sacrifice make it one of the most beloved stories in Sichuan Opera.

In the world of Sichuan Opera, roles are rich and varied. The Huadan character is typically a lively, straightforward maiden, while the Wudan, portrayed by Wan, represents female characters skilled in martial arts. This duality adds depth and excitement to performances. Clad in the elaborate costume of Lady White, Wan embodies the Wudan role with both grace and martial prowess, delivering passionate performances that resonate with audiences.

Recent years have seen a resurgence of interest in traditional Chinese culture, fueled in part by social media platforms. Chinese opera, including Sichuan Opera, has found a new foothold among younger audiences. Wan's short videos showcasing her talent have gone viral, introducing the beauty of Sichuan Opera to a wider audience and enticing more young people to explore The Legend of the White Snake and other classic works.

Originating in Sichuan Province around the 1700s, Sichuan Opera is renowned for its dramatic features such as face-changing, a cappella singing, and its dynamic off-stage chorus. Practitioners describe it as \"hot and spicy,\" capturing the essence of traditional Chinese performance while remaining vibrant and relevant today.

Wan Yuehan's dedication and passion are not only preserving this traditional art form but also inspiring a new generation to appreciate and participate in Sichuan Opera.
