Gen Z Performer Brings Sichuan Opera’s ‘White Snake’ to Life

At just 20 years old, Wan Yuehan is breathing new life into the centuries-old art of Sichuan Opera. A post-2000s performer from the Chongqing Sichuan Opera Theater, Wan has captivated audiences with her portrayal of Lady White in the classic production of The Legend of the White Snake.

While many of her peers are immersed in modern entertainment, Wan’s journey into the traditional world of Sichuan Opera began at the tender age of 10. She is part of a vibrant team of young actors and performers, all born in the 2000s, who started their opera journey around the same age. Together, they demonstrate how the timeless story of Bai Suzhen and Xu Xian continues to enchant new generations.

The Legend of the White Snake is an iconic tale in Chinese culture. It tells the story of Xu Xian, a young man who falls in love with Bai Suzhen, a snake spirit transformed into a beautiful woman. The opera, rich with themes of love, betrayal, and sacrifice, remains one of the most beloved narratives in Sichuan Opera.

What sets Sichuan Opera apart is its unique blend of roles and performance styles. In the opera, the Huadan role is typically a lively, straightforward maiden, while the Wudan role, portrayed by Wan, is reserved for female characters skilled in martial arts. Donning the elaborate costume of Lady White, Wan fully embodies the Wudan character, showcasing her martial prowess and delivering passionate performances that leave audiences spellbound.

In recent years, there has been a resurgence of interest in traditional Chinese culture, particularly among younger audiences. Social media platforms have played a significant role in this revival. Wan’s short videos, which highlight her talent and the intricate beauty of Sichuan Opera, have gone viral. Through these platforms, she has drawn a new generation into the world of The Legend of the White Snake and other traditional performances.

Sichuan Opera, which originated in Sichuan province around 1700, is known for its dramatic features such as face-changing, a cappella singing, and off-stage chorus. Described by practitioners as “hot and spicy,” it captures the essence of Chinese traditional performance in a way that continues to resonate with modern audiences.

Wan’s dedication to her craft and her ability to bridge the gap between tradition and modernity make her a standout figure in the world of Chinese opera. As she and her contemporaries continue to embrace and innovate within this ancient art form, they ensure that the enchantment of Sichuan Opera endures for generations to come.
