China has witnessed an unprecedented surge in new energy vehicle (NEV) ownership, reaching 31.4 million by the end of 2024, according to the Ministry of Public Security’s announcement on Friday. This remarkable growth marks a 260-fold increase over the past decade, underscoring the nation’s commitment to sustainable transportation and technological innovation.
The rapid expansion of NEVs in China can be attributed to significant technological advancements in the industry, the enhancement of charging infrastructure, and a growing eco-friendly consciousness among Chinese residents. In 2024 alone, NEVs accounted for 8.9 percent of the country’s total vehicle ownership. The number of newly registered NEVs soared to 11.25 million, representing a 51.49 percent increase compared to 2023.
The acceleration of NEV adoption is evident when considering historical data. In 2014, the number of NEVs on Chinese roads was a mere 120,000. By the end of June 2022, this figure had surpassed 10 million. The momentum continued as the count doubled by the end of 2023 and exceeded 30 million by the close of 2024.
Official statistics highlight that Chinese NEVs now constitute more than half of the global total. The National Development and Reform Commission notes that China boasts the world’s largest NEV consumption market and stands as one of the most open motor markets globally.
Industry observers emphasize the vast potential of domestic demand, suggesting that it will further propel the development of the NEV sector. The increasing popularity of NEVs is also reflected in their anticipated prominence during this year’s Spring Festival travel rush, which began on Tuesday. To support NEV drivers embarking on journeys home, authorities have established 33,100 charging stations across highway service areas, with 97 percent of these areas now equipped with charging facilities.
As China continues to lead the global NEV market, the country sets a precedent for sustainable transportation and serves as a catalyst for environmental consciousness worldwide. The strides made in the NEV industry not only reflect technological progress but also signify a collective movement towards a greener future.
