Xi and Trump Pledge to Enhance China-U.S. Relations in Telephone Conversation

Chinese President Xi Jinping and U.S. President-elect Donald Trump spoke by phone on Friday, expressing a mutual desire to advance China-U.S. relations. President Xi congratulated Trump on his election victory and emphasized the importance both leaders place on their interactions.

During the conversation, Xi highlighted that China and the United States are two great nations committed to improving the lives of their people. He noted that the countries share extensive common interests and have broad space for cooperation. “China and the U.S. can become partners and friends, achieve mutual success and prosperity, and benefit both countries and the world,” Xi said.

Acknowledging differences due to varying national conditions, Xi stressed the need to respect each other’s core interests and major concerns. He expressed hope that the U.S. would handle the Taiwan question with prudence, as it concerns China’s national sovereignty and territorial integrity.

He called for both nations to uphold principles of mutual respect, peaceful coexistence, and win-win cooperation, and to strengthen collaboration for the benefit of both countries and the world.

President-elect Trump thanked Xi for his congratulations and expressed his appreciation for their great relationship. He emphasized the importance of maintaining dialogue and communication, and looked forward to meeting with President Xi at an early date. “The U.S. and China are the most important countries in the world, and they should maintain their long-lasting friendship and work together to safeguard world peace,” Trump said.

The two leaders exchanged views on major international and regional issues of common concern, including the Ukraine crisis and the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. They agreed to establish a strategic communication channel to maintain regular contact on significant matters affecting both nations.
