Villagers in Guizhou Prepare Sticky Rice Cakes Ahead of Chinese New Year

In Jiangkou County, Guizhou Province, the air is filled with the fragrant aroma of sticky rice as families gather to prepare for the upcoming Chinese New Year. Early in the morning, smoke rises from courtyards throughout the village of Yanxi, signaling the start of a cherished tradition that brings the community together.

Residents come together to make sticky rice cakes, a festive delicacy that symbolizes good fortune and unity. The process begins with rolling sticky white rice balls in bowls of red glutinous rice, giving them a vibrant coating that reflects the joy and auspiciousness of the season.

“Red sticky rice cakes symbolize good fortune,” says Li Yuanzhen, a resident of Yanxi Village. “Every household makes them for the Chinese New Year. This year, we’re preparing over 30 kilograms of rice cake, wishing for a year as vibrant and sweet as these cakes.”

The tradition of making sticky rice cakes has been passed down through generations in Jiangkou County. It is more than just preparing food; it is an opportunity for families and neighbors to come together, share stories, and strengthen communal bonds.
