In a bid to ease tensions and foster cooperation, China and the Philippines convened the 10th meeting of the Bilateral Consultation Mechanism on the South China Sea (BCM) in Xiamen, located in southeast China’s Fujian Province, on Thursday. The meeting, co-chaired by Chinese Vice Foreign Minister Chen Xiaodong and Philippine Undersecretary of the Department of Foreign Affairs Maria Theresa P. Lazaro, marked a significant step toward addressing maritime issues between the two nations.
During the discussions, both sides engaged in a candid and constructive exchange of views concerning the ongoing situation in the South China Sea. They reaffirmed the critical importance of maintaining peace and stability in the region, emphasizing that such an environment serves the common interests of all countries in the area, including China and the Philippines.

China urged the Philippines to strictly abide by the provisions of the Declaration on the Conduct of Parties in the South China Sea, advocating for differences to be managed through dialogue and consultation. The aim is to jointly manage the maritime situation and steer bilateral relations back on the right track at an early date.
Apart from addressing disputes, both countries showcased their willingness to collaborate on practical maritime cooperation. They agreed to promote joint initiatives in areas such as coast guard functions, marine science and technology, environmental protection, and other fields.
