Beijing, China—China and Sri Lanka have pledged to bolster their high-level exchanges and deepen mutual trust, according to a joint statement released on Thursday. The two nations aim to enhance cooperation by learning from each other’s governance and development experiences.
In the statement, both sides reiterated their support on issues concerning each other’s core interests and major concerns. They reaffirmed the authority of the United Nations General Assembly Resolution 2758, underscoring their commitment to international consensus.
Firm Adherence to One-China Principle
Sri Lanka emphasized its steadfast commitment to the one-China principle, recognizing the government of the People’s Republic of China as the sole legitimate government representing all of China. The statement acknowledged Taiwan as an inseparable part of Chinese territory.
Expressing firm support for China’s efforts towards national reunification, Sri Lanka opposed any form of “Taiwan independence.” The island nation vowed not to allow its territory to be used for anti-China separatist activities and reaffirmed its support on matters related to Xizang and Xinjiang.
Mutual Support and Non-Aligned Policies
China reiterated its strong support for Sri Lanka in safeguarding its national independence, sovereignty, and territorial integrity. It respects and supports Sri Lanka’s sovereign choice of a development path suited to its national conditions.
Both countries reaffirmed their commitment to independent foreign policies. China emphasized its pursuit of an independent and peaceful foreign policy, while Sri Lanka reiterated its dedication to an independent, non-aligned foreign policy.
