Chinese Premier Li Qiang met with a delegation from Japan’s ruling coalition in Beijing on Wednesday, marking a significant step towards improving and developing relations between the two nations. The delegation was led by Secretary-General Hiroshi Moriyama of the Liberal Democratic Party and Secretary-General Makoto Nishida of the Komeito Party. Premier Li, who is also a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, emphasized that China-Japan relations are at a crucial juncture. He noted that the resumption of the ruling party exchange mechanism, after nearly seven years, is an important move in implementing the consensus reached by the leaders of both countries. “It is hoped that China and Japan will continue working together to enhance mutual trust, deepen cooperation, manage differences, and promote the sound and steady development of bilateral relations that will bring more benefits to the two peoples,” Premier Li stated. He urged the ruling parties of both countries to focus on safeguarding the long-term fundamental interests of their nations and adopt a responsible attitude towards their people and history. Li highlighted the importance of promoting cooperation and common development, exploring new growth areas in economic cooperation such as technological innovation, the digital economy, and green development. Premier Li also called for increased people-to-people and subnational exchanges to strengthen the social foundation of bilateral relations. The Japanese delegation expressed their willingness to improve China-Japan relations and their commitment to adhering to the principles set out in the four political documents, including the Japan-China Joint Statement. They emphasized that the ruling party exchange mechanism holds far-reaching significance and expressed hope to carry out exchanges at all levels in 2025. The delegation added that they look forward to strengthening exchanges and understanding between the younger generations of the two countries.
