Behind the Scenes of Kunqu Opera: The Timeless ‘Legend of the White Snake’

Kunqu Opera, one of the oldest forms of Chinese opera, has its roots in the Kunshan-Taicang area of Suzhou, in east China’s Jiangsu Province. With a rich history spanning nearly 600 years, Kunqu combines poetry, music, singing, and dance into an integrated art form. Revered as the “teacher or ancestor of a hundred operas” in China, Kunqu was recognized by UNESCO in 2001 as a “Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity.”

Rather than presenting complete operas, Kunqu troupes often perform selected episodes, bringing to life the most captivating moments of each story. Among the most frequently staged excerpts are “Travelling in the Garden,” “Longing for Earthliness,” and “Broken Bridge.”

One of the most enduring tales in the Kunqu repertoire is the classic “Legend of the White Snake.” This story follows the white snake spirit, Bai Suzhen, who falls in love with Xu Xian, a kind-hearted man she meets by the scenic West Lake. To help Xu Xian fulfill his dream of opening a pharmacy, Bai Suzhen sends her loyal companion, Xiaoqing, on a daring mission to steal money from the treasury of a corrupt official. The narrative unfolds with Xiaoqing and her allies successfully retrieving the funds after a thrilling confrontation with the guards.

Behind the scenes, performers dedicate countless hours to perfecting the intricate movements and emotive vocals that bring “Legend of the White Snake” to life. Their dedication preserves the essence of Kunqu Opera, ensuring that this ancient art form continues to captivate audiences both in Asia and around the world.
