In a move that underscores the strengthening ties between China and Venezuela, Chinese President Xi Jinping’s special envoy, Wang Dongming, attended the inauguration ceremony of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro on Friday. Wang, who serves as the vice chairperson of the Standing Committee of the National People’s Congress, was invited by the Venezuelan government to represent China at the event.
Following the inauguration, President Maduro met with Wang at the presidential palace, where they discussed the deepening of bilateral relations. Wang conveyed President Xi’s cordial greetings and congratulations to Maduro on his re-election. He emphasized the importance of the China-Venezuela relationship, highlighting the upgrade to an all-weather strategic partnership announced by both leaders in September 2023.
“China is willing to work with Venezuela to implement the important consensus reached by our heads of state,” Wang stated. “We aim to consolidate and develop our traditional friendship and push forward bilateral relations for the benefit of our peoples.”
Maduro expressed his gratitude to President Xi for sending a special envoy to his inauguration. He conveyed his highest respect and sincere greetings to Xi, emphasizing Venezuela’s commitment to the all-weather strategic partnership with China. “Venezuela firmly supports China in safeguarding its core interests,” Maduro said. “We are ready to join hands with China to advance practical cooperation in various fields, strengthen the exchange of governance experience, and elevate our bilateral ties to a new level.”
The meeting underscored the historical ties between the two nations. Last year marked the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and Venezuela, a milestone celebrated with solemn ceremonies and a renewed commitment to mutual cooperation.
The visit by Xi’s special envoy reflects China’s ongoing efforts to strengthen its relationships in the global arena, particularly with countries in Latin America.
