Pawn Man’s Journey: How a WWII Photo Album United Youth in China and America

What’s the first news event or viral video that springs to mind when you think back to China in 2024? For many, it’s the remarkable story of American social media influencer Evan Kail, also known as “Pawn Man,” and his unexpected role in bridging cultural gaps between China and the United States.

In November, Evan traveled to China to experience the country firsthand, a moment that stands out as a highlight in fostering exchanges between young Chinese and American people. His journey began two years ago in Minnesota, where he runs a coins and collectibles shop. A customer brought him a WWII-era photo album documenting Japan’s invasion of China. Intrigued by its historical significance, Evan posted a TikTok video about it, which garnered worldwide attention and sparked numerous online discussions.

“At first, I was hailed as a hero after claiming to have uncovered unseen evidence of the Nanjing Massacre, an event in 1937 that historians have rightly dubbed a ‘forgotten holocaust,’” Evan recalled. “But within 48 hours, the tide turned, and I found myself branded as a hoaxer. Speculation about my ‘sinister’ intentions ran rampant. People said I was using a war crime to fuel my own fame.”

Undeterred by the backlash, Evan decided to donate the album to the Consulate General of China in Chicago. In recognition of his gesture, he was gifted state porcelain as a token of appreciation. Remarkably, only three individual foreigners have received China’s national gift: Henry Norman Bethune, John Rabe, and now, Evan Kail.

Evan’s story is more than a tale of an artifact; it’s a testament to the power of youth in bridging divides and breaking biases. His actions opened avenues for dialogue and understanding between young people in China and the United States, highlighting the significant role individuals can play in international relations.

As exchanges between the two nations’ youth continue to grow, stories like Evan’s serve as inspiration for fostering mutual respect and collaboration. In a world often divided by misunderstanding, the efforts of individuals can make a profound difference in building bridges across cultures.
