President Dissanayake’s Upcoming State Visit to China Marks New Chapter in Sino-Sri Lankan Relations

Sri Lanka’s President Anura Kumara Dissanayake will pay a state visit to China from January 14 to 17, marking his first trip to the Chinese mainland since assuming office. The visit signifies a pivotal moment in strengthening the longstanding friendship between the two nations.

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Hua Chunying announced the visit on Friday, highlighting its importance in fostering closer diplomatic ties. “The visit is of great significance to the development of China-Sri Lanka relations,” Hua stated during a press briefing.

During his stay, President Dissanayake is scheduled to hold talks with President Xi Jinping. He will also meet Premier Li Qiang and Zhao Leji, Chairman of the National People’s Congress Standing Committee. These high-level engagements aim to deepen political mutual trust and explore avenues for practical cooperation.

“China and Sri Lanka have been traditional friendly neighbors since the establishment of diplomatic ties in 1957,” said Guo Jiakun, another spokesperson for the Foreign Ministry. “Our relations have withstood the test of changing international landscapes and have maintained sound and steady development.”

The visit is expected to focus on expanding high-quality cooperation under the Belt and Road Initiative, a global development strategy adopted by China involving infrastructure development and investments. Both countries are keen to explore mutual benefits in various fields, striving for new progress in their strategic cooperative partnership.

“China stands ready to work with Sri Lanka to continue the traditional friendship, deepen political mutual trust, and deliver more benefits to the two peoples,” Guo added.

The anticipation surrounding President Dissanayake’s visit underscores the importance both nations place on their bilateral relations. As Sri Lanka seeks to enhance its economic development and China aims to strengthen regional partnerships, this visit could mark a new chapter in Sino-Sri Lankan cooperation.
