In the coastal county of Xiangshan in Ningbo, east China’s Zhejiang Province, an ancient tradition breathes new life into the art world. Fish rubbing, once a humble practice among fishermen, has evolved into a celebrated form of artistic expression that captures the intricate beauty of marine life.
Centuries ago, the fishermen of Xiangshan sought ways to celebrate the Spring Festival amid limited resources. Lacking the skills in papercutting or calligraphy for crafting traditional Spring Festival couplets, they turned to what they knew best—the sea and its bounties. Using ink extracted from cuttlefish, they applied it onto the bodies of dead fish and pressed red paper over them to “print” the fish’s image. This ingenious method created unique decorations that embodied their hopes and wishes for the New Year.
“It was a practical solution that connected their livelihood with their cultural traditions,” explains Lu Shenggui, a local inheritor of the fish rubbing technique. “The prints not only replaced the couplets but also honored the sea that sustained them.”
Today, fish rubbing has transcended its utilitarian roots to become an art form celebrated for its detailed and lifelike impressions. Modern artists employ dyes like propylene and are exploring environmentally friendly vegetable dyes to capture every scale and fin with astonishing accuracy. Each print is a testament to the close relationship between coastal communities and the sea, preserving the legacy of generations past.
Beyond the studios, Lu brings this tradition to the younger generation by teaching fish rubbing at local kindergartens. “The children bring their imagination to the art,” he says. “They create vibrant prints that blend tradition with innovation.”
Through these educational efforts, fish rubbing continues to evolve, ensuring that the echoes of the sea resonate with future generations. The art form stands as a living heritage, reflecting the community’s enduring bond with the ocean and its commitment to preserving cultural traditions.
