The city of Harbin in northeast China’s Heilongjiang Province is abuzz with preparations for the upcoming 2025 Asian Winter Games. As the host city, Harbin is pulling out all the stops to offer a memorable and spectacular opening ceremony that promises to captivate audiences around the world.
Sha Xiaolan, the chief director responsible for orchestrating both the opening and closing ceremonies, shared his excitement and vision for the event. “The overall progress has been very smooth,” Sha told China Media Group (CMG). “We started rehearsals for individual segments at the main venue in December, and I’m pleased to say that this phase has been successfully completed.”
Having previously helmed the ceremonies for the Winter Olympic and Paralympic Games in Beijing in 2022, Sha and his creative team are eager to replicate and surpass their past successes. “We are now moving on to the next stage, where we will integrate all the segments together for a cohesive performance,” Sha said. “Our aim is to present a simple, yet spectacular and safe opening ceremony that resonates with the theme of this event: ‘Dream of Winter, Love among Asia.'”
Sha highlighted that iconic landmarks of Harbin, such as Central Avenue, the Ice and Snow World, and Music Square, have served as profound inspirations for the creative team. “These elements will be woven into the fabric of the opening ceremony, serving as both our aesthetic inspiration and foundation, thereby showcasing the enchanting charm of Harbin.”
The 2025 Asian Winter Games is set to be a landmark event, with a record-breaking 1,275 athletes from 34 countries and regions registering to participate, including debut appearances by Cambodia and Saudi Arabia. The influx of athletes is expected to make this the most attended Asian Winter Games in history.
