Prime Minister Dickon Mitchell of Grenada is set to embark on an official visit to China from January 11 to 17, as announced by Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun on Thursday. The visit coincides with the 20th anniversary of the re-establishment of diplomatic relations between China and Grenada, marking a significant milestone in their bilateral ties.
During his stay, Prime Minister Mitchell will meet with President Xi Jinping in Beijing. Premier Li Qiang will host a welcoming ceremony and hold talks with the Grenadian prime minister. The two leaders are expected to jointly attend a signing ceremony for cooperation documents, signaling a mutual commitment to enhancing practical cooperation across various sectors.
Zhao Leji, chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People’s Congress, will also meet with Prime Minister Mitchell. The discussions aim to deepen political mutual trust and explore issues of mutual interest, further solidifying the foundation of the China-Grenada relationship.
Apart from Beijing, Prime Minister Mitchell will visit Zhejiang and Shanghai, reflecting an interest in broader engagement with China’s regional developments and economic opportunities.
“Grenada is an important country in the Caribbean and a significant cooperation partner of China in the region,” Guo Jiakun stated. “Over the past two decades since the restoration of diplomatic ties, both countries have treated each other with mutual respect and on an equal footing, supporting each other on core interests and major concerns. Bilateral relations remain sound and steady.”
The Chinese side expresses confidence that this visit will “further cement political mutual trust, deepen practical cooperation in various areas, enhance the friendship, and take bilateral relations to a new height,” according to Guo.
Prime Minister Mitchell’s visit underscores the growing importance of China-Caribbean relations and represents an opportunity to strengthen economic, cultural, and diplomatic connections between the two nations.
