China and Nigeria Exemplify Global South Solidarity, Says Wang Yi

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi hailed the partnership between China and Nigeria as a model of Global South solidarity during his meeting with Nigerian President Bola Tinubu in Abuja on Thursday.

Wang Yi, who is also a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, emphasized that the relationship between the two nations has transcended bilateral ties. He called for collaborative efforts to build an all-weather China-Africa community with a shared future for the new era.

He noted that the elevation of China-Nigeria relations to a comprehensive strategic partnership last September marked a new milestone. “China and Nigeria have always respected each other and treated each other as equals,” Wang stated.

Highlighting mutual understanding and support on core interests, Wang praised the mutual benefits and win-win cooperation achieved on the path to development and revitalization, positioning the relationship at the forefront of China-Africa relations.

Wang referenced the significant outcomes of the Beijing Summit of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC), including the ten partnership action plans. He expressed China’s readiness to strengthen alignment with Nigeria, tap into cooperation potential, expand collaboration, and assist Nigeria in accelerating its development and revitalization.

“China supports Nigeria in combating terrorism, safeguarding regional peace and stability, and playing a bigger role in international affairs,” Wang added.

President Tinubu affirmed the “unbreakable” friendship between Nigeria and China, emphasizing the importance his country places on the relationship. He noted that implementing the outcomes of the FOCAC Beijing Summit is conducive to Nigeria’s development and expressed hope for China’s support in enhancing Nigeria’s role in global and regional affairs.

Tinubu also extended condolences to China over the earthquake that struck the Xizang Autonomous Region, commending the Chinese government’s swift and effective disaster relief efforts. Wang responded with confidence in overcoming the natural disaster and rebuilding homes promptly.

On the same day, Wang held talks with Nigeria’s Foreign Minister Yusuf Maitama Tuggar, and the two ministers jointly addressed the press.
