In the aftermath of a powerful magnitude-6.8 earthquake that struck the Xizang Autonomous Region, China is mobilizing extensive relief and rescue efforts to aid affected communities. The quake jolted Dingri County in the city of Xigaze, causing significant disruptions in the region.

At a recent press briefing, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun detailed the coordinated response underway. President Xi Jinping has ordered all-out rescue efforts to save lives, minimize casualties, prevent secondary disasters, and ensure the effective resettlement of affected residents.

“The priority is to save lives and restore normalcy as quickly as possible,” Guo emphasized. He added that Premier Li Qiang has urged comprehensive efforts to organize rescue operations, highlighting the importance of minimizing casualties and ensuring the safety of the populace.

Vice Premier Zhang Guoqing has led a team to the quake-stricken area to oversee the relief operations firsthand. The government’s swift action includes launching a level-II emergency response, signaling the mobilization of resources at a national level.

The first batch of disaster relief materials dispatched by central authorities has already arrived in the region. “All road sections damaged by the earthquake in Dingri County have been reopened,” Guo reported, facilitating the transport of essential supplies and personnel.

Efforts to restore infrastructure are progressing rapidly. Power supply has been reinstated to Dingri County and surrounding townships and villages. Communication networks, vital for coordinating rescue and relief efforts, have also been restored, ensuring that residents can stay informed and connected.

“We believe that the people in the disaster-stricken area will overcome the adversity and rebuild their homes,” Guo stated, expressing confidence in the resilience of the affected communities.
