CPC Calls for Renewed Determination in Ongoing Anti-Corruption Battle

The Communist Party of China (CPC) has issued a call for unwavering confidence and perseverance in the protracted fight against corruption, acknowledging that the situation remains grave and complex. This message emerged from a communique adopted at the fourth plenary session of the 20th CPC Central Commission for Discipline Inspection (CCDI), held in Beijing from January 6 to 8.

Xi Jinping, general secretary of the CPC Central Committee, Chinese president, and chairman of the Central Military Commission, attended the session and delivered a significant speech. Reflecting on the achievements of 2024 and setting the agenda for 2025, the plenary session reviewed disciplinary and supervisory work, emphasizing the need for continued vigilance and action.

Li Xi, a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and secretary of the CCDI, presented a work report on behalf of the CCDI’s Standing Committee. Attendees agreed to advance the fight against corruption under Xi’s guidance, striving to eliminate the breeding grounds and conditions that foster corrupt practices.

The communique highlighted notable progress in 2024, including targeted actions against hedonism, extravagance, bureaucratism, and pointless formalities. The anti-corruption campaign intensified in key sectors such as finance, energy, and sports, uncovering new forms of corruption and punishing both those who offer and accept bribes. Regular disciplinary inspections were conducted across 68 departments throughout the year.

Despite these achievements, the communique stressed that the battle against corruption remains challenging. It called for strengthened confidence in overcoming these obstacles, acknowledging that the situation “remains grave and complex.”

Looking ahead to 2025, the CCDI urged continued efforts to support Chinese modernization by enhancing political oversight, deepening reforms, and consolidating gains in Party discipline education. The focus will be on improving mechanisms to investigate and address misconduct and corruption, particularly in identifying covert forms of bureaucratism, hedonism, and extravagance.

The communique emphasized the importance of addressing violations that undermine market order or increase burdens at lower levels of governance. It also highlighted the need for early warning and supervision when officials’ family members engage in business operations that violate regulations.

Strong actions were called for to tackle corruption occurring at the grassroots level, ensuring that all people can benefit more fairly from development outcomes. The communique advocated for leveraging disciplinary inspections for more precise problem identification and effective solutions, and for deepening the reform of the disciplinary inspection and supervision system.

In closing, the communique underscored the commitment to advancing high-quality development of disciplinary inspection and supervision work in the new era, providing robust support for building China into a strong country and promoting national rejuvenation through Chinese modernization.

Party and state leaders, including Li Qiang, Zhao Leji, Wang Huning, Cai Qi, Ding Xuexiang, and Li Xi, attended the meeting.
