Chinese Vice Premier Leads Rescue Efforts After Deadly Xizang Earthquake

In the wake of a devastating magnitude-6.8 earthquake that struck the Xizang Autonomous Region, Chinese Vice Premier Zhang Guoqing has called for all-out efforts to rescue and treat the injured. The quake, which hit Dingri County in the city of Xigaze on Tuesday, has left 126 people dead and 188 others injured by midnight.

Zhang, who is also a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, arrived promptly at the disaster site to oversee rescue and relief operations. He immediately headed to Changsuo Township, the most severely affected area, where he visited quake victims at rescue sites, temporary shelters, and hospitals.

“Our priority is to ensure the safety and well-being of every resident affected by this tragedy,” Zhang emphasized during a meeting on the next stage of rescue work. He stressed the importance of providing adequate heating supplies, as the quake-hit zone is located in high-altitude and frigid areas, especially with winter approaching.

The vice premier also called for enhanced monitoring and early warning systems for aftershocks. He urged thorough inspections of damaged buildings and potential geological hazards to prevent secondary injuries and fatalities.

Rescue teams are working tirelessly to repair damaged infrastructure and restore essential services. Medical personnel are providing critical care to the injured, while relief supplies are being distributed to ensure that affected residents have access to food, water, and shelter.

“Post-disaster reconstruction must be accelerated to ensure that quake-hit residents can move into safe and warm homes as soon as possible,” Zhang stated. He highlighted the need for coordinated efforts among various government departments and agencies to facilitate the rebuilding process.

The Chinese government has mobilized resources nationwide to support the relief efforts in Xizang. Volunteers and aid organizations are joining hands to assist those in need, demonstrating solidarity and compassion in the face of adversity.

The quake has brought significant challenges to the region, known for its high-altitude terrain and harsh climate. As rescue operations continue, the focus remains on safeguarding lives and helping the community recover from this natural disaster.
