At 9:05 a.m. Beijing Time on Tuesday, a powerful magnitude-6.8 earthquake shook Dingri County in the city of Xigaze, located in southwest China’s Xizang Autonomous Region. The quake resulted in the tragic loss of nine lives, as reported by China Media Group.
Significant structural damage occurred in Tonglai Village, Changsuo Town of Dingri County, where houses collapsed under the force of the tremors. Rescue efforts are underway as authorities assess the extent of the damage and provide aid to the affected residents.
According to the China Earthquake Networks Center, the epicenter was pinpointed at 28.5 degrees north latitude and 87.45 degrees east longitude, with the quake originating at a depth of 10 kilometers beneath the earth’s surface.
The powerful earthquake was felt beyond China’s borders, with strong tremors reported in Nepal’s Kathmandu Valley, causing concern among residents in the neighboring region.
As of 10:00 a.m., the area experienced multiple aftershocks, the strongest of which registered a magnitude of 4.4. Authorities have issued warnings for potential further seismic activity and are monitoring the situation closely to ensure the safety of the population.
