Chinese President Xi Jinping’s special envoy, Hao Mingjin, is set to attend the inauguration of Ghana’s president-elect, John Dramani Mahama, signaling a strengthening of diplomatic ties between China and Ghana. The announcement was made on Monday by Guo Jiakun, spokesperson for the Chinese Foreign Ministry.
Hao Mingjin, who serves as the vice chairperson of the Standing Committee of the National People’s Congress, will represent China at the inauguration ceremony scheduled for January 7 in Accra, the capital of the West African country.
John Dramani Mahama was declared the winner of Ghana’s presidential election by the Electoral Commission of Ghana on December 9, 2024. His upcoming inauguration marks his return to the presidency, and China’s attendance at the event underscores the importance of the bilateral relationship between the two nations.
China and Ghana have enjoyed longstanding cooperative relations, with collaborations spanning infrastructure development, trade, and cultural exchanges. The participation of President Xi’s special envoy in the inauguration ceremony reflects China’s commitment to deepening these ties and supporting Ghana’s development aspirations.
The Chinese Foreign Ministry’s announcement follows President Xi Jinping’s earlier congratulatory message to President-elect Mahama, in which he expressed China’s readiness to work with Ghana to enhance mutual cooperation and promote common development.
