As the Spring Festival approaches, the coastal county of Xiangshan in Ningbo City, east China’s Zhejiang Province, is abuzz with activity. Local craftsmen are diligently preparing vibrant fish lanterns, symbols of abundance, prosperity, and renewal, to celebrate the most significant festival in Chinese culture.
The tradition of crafting fish lanterns in Xiangshan is deeply rooted in the ancient Chinese saying “年年有余” (nián nián yǒu yú), which means “May you have surplus year after year.” The word “鱼” (yú) in Chinese means “fish,” and it sounds similar to “余” (yú), meaning “surplus.” This play on words embodies the fishermen’s hopes for a bountiful and joyous new year.
For generations, the art of making fish lanterns has been passed down in Xiangshan. For the residents, these lanterns are not merely decorative items but a tribute to their seafaring heritage and a reflection of their aspirations for prosperity. Each lantern tells a story, illuminating the streets and hearts of the community during the festivities.
Among the dedicated artisans is 80-year-old Bao Jiqin. Born and raised in Shipu, a town in Xiangshan, Bao has devoted decades to perfecting this traditional craft. His passion for drawing since childhood naturally led him to create carp lanterns at a young age. After the late 1990s, when Xiangshan held its first Fishing Season Festival—a celebration marking the start of a new fishing season following the fishing moratorium—Bao expanded his designs to include a variety of marine life, such as yellow croakers and cuttlefish.
To ensure authenticity in his creations, Bao has amassed numerous books and materials on marine life. He meticulously studies fish shapes and behaviors, striving to capture the essence of each species in his lanterns. “I want my lanterns to reflect the true beauty of the sea,” Bao shares. “It’s a way to honor our connection to the ocean.”
Every year, on the 14th day of the first lunar month, Xiangshan County comes alive with a spectacular parade. Locals hold their intricately crafted fish lanterns high as they traverse through the streets, illuminating the night with a warm glow. The procession is a vibrant display of culture and community spirit, celebrating the start of the new year with hope and joy.
The fish lantern tradition not only preserves an important aspect of Xiangshan’s cultural heritage but also brings together generations. Young and old participate in the creation and celebration, ensuring that this luminous legacy continues to shine brightly for years to come.
