Guo Jiakun Makes Debut as China’s New Foreign Ministry Spokesperson

Guo Jiakun, the newly appointed spokesperson for China’s Foreign Ministry, made his official debut at a press conference in Beijing on Monday. Born in 1980, Guo becomes the 35th spokesperson for the ministry, bringing fresh perspectives to China’s diplomatic engagements.

Established in 1983, the Foreign Ministry’s spokesperson system was the first of its kind among Chinese government departments. For 42 years, it has operated without interruption, evolving into a more systematic, standardized, and efficient platform, according to Xinhua.

Notably, the Foreign Ministry remains the only government department in China to hold regular press conferences every working day. These efforts are consistently aimed at safeguarding national sovereignty, security, and dignity, while enhancing understanding of China’s diplomacy both domestically and internationally, and fostering friendly cooperation between China and other countries.

The development of the Foreign Ministry’s spokesperson system aligns with China’s deepening reforms and opening-up policies. It reflects the evolving global trends, the trajectory of China’s international relations, and the growing need for mutual understanding between China and the rest of the world.
