BEIJING — Chinese Premier Li Qiang on Friday emphasized the importance of safeguarding migrant workers’ rights during a State Council executive meeting. Addressing key issues that impact millions across the nation, the meeting focused on ensuring timely wage payments to migrant workers, advancing urban renewal projects, and protecting ancient and notable trees.
The premier underscored that guaranteeing wage payments is a significant matter concerning people’s well-being. “It is imperative to earnestly safeguard the legitimate rights and interests of migrant workers,” the meeting noted. Li called for strengthened data connectivity among relevant departments, including human resources, social security, and finance, to ensure that workers receive their due compensation without delays.
Urban renewal emerged as a crucial topic, with the meeting highlighting its role in enhancing city living quality and expanding domestic demand. The council resolved to accelerate the renovation of old residential communities, blocks, factory areas, and urban villages. “Efforts should be made to build resilient and smart cities that are desirable to live in,” the meeting determined, emphasizing the need for upgraded urban infrastructure and ecosystems.
Preserving urban history and culture was also a focal point. The meeting stressed the importance of remediating urban ecosystems and protecting the cultural heritage embedded within cities. To support these initiatives, the council called for bolstering the supply of resources such as funds and land, and attracting more private capital to participate in urban renewal projects. Innovative efforts tailored to local conditions were encouraged to promote high-quality urban development.
In addition, the State Council reviewed and approved a draft regulation on the protection of ancient and notable trees. Recognizing their environmental and cultural significance, the meeting emphasized the urgency of developing management standards and supporting systems for their protection. Authorities were urged to crack down on offenses such as poisoning and illegal logging to preserve these natural treasures for future generations.
Premier Li’s meeting reflected a comprehensive approach to addressing social, economic, and environmental issues, demonstrating the government’s commitment to improving the livelihoods of its people and the sustainability of its cities.
