Captivated by the majestic Great Wall during U.S. President Richard Nixon’s historic visit in 1972, American designer and architect Jim Spear dreamed of one day owning a house beneath it. That dream became a reality in 1994 when he acquired a house in Beijing’s Mutianyu Village.
After moving in, Spear initiated an ambitious renovation program. He transformed an abandoned primary school into a thriving restaurant, an art glass shop, and a gallery, breathing new life into the local community. Embracing the blend of old and new, his designs preserved the historical essence while introducing modern functionality.
In 2006, he took on another project by renting and renovating a disused glaze tile factory in Beigou Village. This once-neglected space was converted into a charming hotel, attracting travelers and cultural enthusiasts from around the world. Spear’s dedication to integrating modern design with traditional architecture has not only revitalized these villages but also fostered economic growth and cultural exchange.
