China is set to significantly expand its high-speed railway network, aiming to reach 60,000 kilometers of operational tracks by 2030. This ambitious plan reflects an increase from 48,000 kilometers at the end of 2024, according to data released by China State Railway Group Co., Ltd. (China Railway) on Thursday.
The expansion is part of the country’s ongoing efforts to enhance its railway infrastructure and improve connectivity across regions. By 2030, the total operating mileage of China’s railway network is expected to reach 180,000 kilometers, up from 162,000 kilometers at the end of 2024, showcasing the nation’s commitment to advancing its transportation capabilities.
China Railway also announced that fixed-asset investment in the railway sector is projected to hit 590 billion yuan (approximately $82.08 billion) in 2025. Within that year alone, an estimated 2,600 kilometers of new rail tracks are slated to become operational, further bolstering the country’s transportation network.
The expansion comes amid record-breaking usage of China’s railways. In 2024, the network handled an unprecedented 4.08 billion passenger trips, marking a 10.8 percent increase compared to 2023. This upward trend is expected to continue, with projections suggesting passenger trips could reach 4.28 billion in 2025.
The growth of the high-speed rail network not only enhances domestic connectivity but also plays a vital role in supporting China’s economic development. By facilitating more efficient movement of people and goods, the expanded network is poised to contribute significantly to regional development and integration.
As China continues to invest in its railway infrastructure, the global community watches closely, recognizing the impact such developments have on international trade and economic dynamics. The expansion of the high-speed rail network underscores China’s dedication to innovation and modernization within its transportation sector.
