Chinese Ambassador Offers Condolences to Earthquake Victims’ Families in Vanuatu

In the wake of the devastating earthquakes that struck Vanuatu earlier this month, Chinese Ambassador Li Minggang visited the families of Chinese nationals who lost their lives in the disaster. On Wednesday, Ambassador Li expressed his heartfelt condolences and offered sympathy to the bereaved families, assuring them of the embassy’s unwavering support during this challenging time.

“We share in your grief and stand with you,” Li said to the families. “The embassy will provide all necessary assistance to help you navigate through this difficult period.”

The ambassador also emphasized that the Chinese embassy has urged the Vanuatu government and relevant authorities to expedite post-disaster arrangements, highlighting the importance of swift and effective measures to aid those affected.

Vanuatu was rocked by a powerful 7.3-magnitude earthquake on December 17, resulting in at least 14 fatalities and injuring over 200 people. The catastrophe was further compounded when a subsequent 6.1-magnitude quake struck on December 22, causing extensive damage to infrastructure and worsening the humanitarian situation.

In response to the crisis, China dispatched a team of four technical specialists to Vanuatu earlier this week to assist in recovery efforts. According to the Chinese Foreign Ministry, the team will conduct scientific examinations of building structures in severely affected areas, carry out safety assessments, and investigate potential secondary disasters.

The Chinese government’s swift action underscores the deepening ties between China and Vanuatu, as well as China’s commitment to supporting Pacific Island nations in times of need. The collaborative efforts aim not only to provide immediate relief but also to strengthen resilience against future natural disasters.
